The Philadelphia Fire Department (PFD) is the primary provider of fire protection and emergency medical services (EMS) in the City of Philadelphia. As the largest fire department in Pennsylvania, the PFD's mission is to safeguard lives and property through fire suppression, emergency medical response, and fire prevention education. Established in 1736 by Benjamin Franklin as the Union Fire Company, it was the first volunteer fire company in the United States. The department operates numerous fire stations and employs a large workforce of firefighters and paramedics. Revenue is generated through municipal funding and grants, supporting its extensive operations and community services.
